PostSubject: Questions and Answers from Hifumi Kouno itself   Wed Jan 05, 2011 4:51 am

This is an e-mail I got from Mr. Hifumi Kouno itself, the creator of Clock Tower: The First Fear and its sequel, Clock Tower 2 (Clock Tower PSX). I'm so glad to share this with all of you. My questions are in red, his answers in blue. Enjoy Smile

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Mr. Kouno, I am a big fan of Clock Tower, I hope you don't mind about this e-mail, I would like to ask you some questions and I would be more than happy if you can answer them when you have time. n_n

Mr. Leandro Nesterczuk,

Happy new Year.
This is Hifumi Kouno of NudeMaker Co. Ltd.
Thank you for your inquiry regarding Clocktower.

It is quite difficult to respond to these kinds of
emails promptly, but I hope you understand that I do
appreciate them.

Here are the answers to your question:.

1) What is the evil statue from both parts 1 and 2? Where did it come from and why does it have so much importance in the spell to kill scissorman?

1.The Evil Statue was originally used by members of the
Burrows' to open the portal to an alien world to gain
evil powers. As such, to the Evil Statue is seen in
Clocktower1 and Clocktower2 to suggest continuity in events.
Evil Statues were originally treasures used for satanic rituals,
but at the same time it is only a "tool." The value of a tool
always depends on the way in which people apply it.

2) Where does that big door portal at the end of Clock Tower 2 leads to?

2.The last portal in Clocktower2 leads to a world that cannot be
perceived by the limited human cognitive system. There lays the land
were the Scissormen are originally born.

3) What do you think about the rumor going around of a Clock Tower movie coming out? Would you like to have some participation on the ideas and design for the movie?

3. It is difficult for me to make a comment without seeing the complete movie.
Although I would be happy to cooperate in the production of the movie, since copyright for the Clocktower series belongs to Capcom, there is very little I can do without their consent.

4) Did you think of Clock Tower 1 and 2 as a single story from the beginning or did you think about Clock Tower 2 after finishing part one?

4. Originally, I had no plans after the completion of Clocktower1.
This was the first original title for me, and there was the possibility that
with the results of this title, my career as a director could end. In reality,
the sales for Clocktower1 was not as good as we expected.
However, to develop games for new consoles at the time (Playstation and Sega Saturn), there were opinions within the company to create a sequal, and that was how Clocktower2 began.

5) What's your favourite part of each game?

5. In Clocktower1, I like the theme of "Horror in Quietness," and the
large statue of a baby. In Clocktower2, a black-comedy-like touch was added
due to the dramatic system. I especially enjoy the scene where
Scissorman is laughing while he watches a cartoon.

6) I've heard you are planning to do some continuation to Clock Tower story in a future game. Will it continue Jennifer story?

6. My plans on thre creation of a further continuation on Clocktower
has been tossed up and down by the quick speed that the game software
market has gone through. This includes setting the proper budget,
proper console, to name a few problems. Creators of Horror Shooter games
may not suffer as much, but creators of straigh Horror creators seem to be
encountering the same problem. The Project outline is complete and
we can begin developing anytime, but please understand that it is difficult
for me to make any statements or promises at this time.

7) Many people seems to be disturbed for Nolan-Jennifer's relationship. Did you think about this relationship as something normal or as pederasty feeling from Nolan?

7. While I was writing the script, this relationship came natural to me,
so I felt nothing unnatural about their relationship. However, looking back,
you have a point that their age difference is indeed quite unnatural.

Based on the environment Jennifer was raised in, and through her experiences of
overcoming fearful situations in Clocktower1, she is illustrated as being much more
mature than her age would suggest. That may have been the reason that I felt
nothing wrong with their relationship at the time.

Cool What do you think of fan-remakes and fan-fiction about Clock Tower?

8. I am not quite familiar with what Clocktower fans have created, but if fans are
re-creating work for the series, I must say that I as well as the Clocktower series
is very fortunate.

As far as I know, this movie was quite amusing.

The people that created this piece of work really understand Clocktower and
the horror genre very deeply. It is amazing that they even simulate ghosts of children.
With the high quality modeling and motions, I wonder who is the professional, me or them. Hahaha

9) Last one: Did you ever expect Clock Tower to have such a huge fan base and community?

9. Frankly, I had no expectations that the series would be supported by
as many people as it is. I feel fortunate that even people abroad are making i
nquiries about this title to this day.

I hope my answers are satisfying.
Thanks again for getting in touch.

It is my wish that Clocktower fans will continue playing high quality
horror games.

Sincerely,
Hifumi Kouo

President and Director
Nudemaker Co. Ltd.

The fact that they do have something ready for development that is related to the Clock Tower universe, is very exciting indeed. However, he is right...there is no market right now for games like Clock Tower. People want guns and ammo right now and until this fad wears off, we can not expect to see anymore of these types of games creep out from the darkness. It's a very sad reality right now in the gaming world.

I wouldn't so much as call it a fad, but rather a restriction companies have on themselves due to the economy. They continue to use franchises that they know will make them money, much like the Call of Duty games and many more. There are very few companies/games that break this monotony and we get the same games over and over again. I have succumb to buying many of these sequels (Left 4 Dead(2), Little big planet 2, Killzone 2(3), Final Fantasy 13) and frankly, I'm getting tired of it. The next game that seems off the wall and awesome is The Last Guardian...

The nice thing however, is that there are indie developers who have all the freedom they want; The Path, which is made by Tale of Tales, is an extremely creative approach to the classic tale of little red riding hood with an extremely creepy twist.

I Just hope we get out of this slump so we can see some creative and different games.
